Aruãn lima santos
Arabic Calendar, 2024, oil on canvas with canvas ribbon, 80x100cm
Aruãn Lima Santos (b.2002) is a painter and sculptor whose practice, ostensibly abstract, erodes the boundary between physical and psychological landscapes. Working primarily in small-scale oils, he transforms real landscapes through memory and imagination, into abstract geometric compositions. His distinctive technique of layering oil paint, shellac, threads, and pieces of canvas allows him to create works with dense and complex textural qualities, and to infuse his artwork with a deep luminosity.
Aruãn’s sculptural practice features large metallic forms that maintain a painter's sensitivity, treating patina as an extension of his chromatic vocabulary. This approach reflects his background in heavy industry, where he worked as a vulcaniser fabricating conveyor belts before pursuing art.
Aruãn studied at Leeds Arts University and graduated from Camberwell College of Art, London, in 2024. He now lives and works in South London.
