Bacchus et Ariadne, 2024, marble, 80x100cm (detail)
Caroline Williams (b. Paris) is a sculptor working primarily in stone, clay, and bronze, creating works that transform dense materials into flowing, ethereal forms. Her sculptures appear as dreamlike compositions where fiction and reality coalesce. Crumpled fabrics are rendered eternal in stone, and serpentine forms spiral through space, materialising the invisible movement of air through solid matter.
Caroline’s work evokes a sense of the uncanny, presenting familiar objects and forms in ways that feel both ancient and contemporary. Her sculptures demonstrate an exceptional understanding of movement and flow. This transformation of heavy media into apparently weightless forms showcases her technical precision. Caroline began her career as a toy designer, where she developed a strong foundation in painting, perspective, and construction. While living in Hong Kong, she expanded into ceramics, completing two residencies in Jingdezhen that furthered her understanding of shape, volume, and space. These experiences culminated in the development of her sculptural practice, refined during her studies at City and Guilds of London Art School, where she received a distinction for her Graduate Diploma.
Today, Caroline’s practice combines her high level of craftmanship with an acute aesthetic sensibility, producing works that are both technically accomplished and conceptually engaging. Her sculptures exist in a state of perpetual equilibrium, inviting viewers into contemplative spaces where the familiar becomes extraordinary.
