Pretending not to notice, 2024, oil on board, 53x73cm

The paintings of Tamar Rubinstein explore the codependent relationship between the self and its environment, the tension between mental and physical distance, experiences of detachment and isolation, and the search for belonging.

Tamar uses a range of devices to capture the emotional truth of lived realities and the. The heaviness of her intense palette is balanced with lighter tones and a technique approximating airbrushing but achieved by hand. The characters of her paintings are situated in surroundings and attended by props which are instantly compelling but, upon closer inspection, reveal deeper narratives.

The disproportionately diminutive heads of her characters is inspired by the shadow of the human body with its elongated limbs, and how this adapts to the surface on which it’s cast, just as we constantly adjust both physically and mentally to our surroundings.

Tamar graduated from the BA in Fine Art at Camberwell College of Arts.
